Description
Pure Labdanum Crude Resinoid is a rich, dark and highly concentrated natural perfumery material obtained from the aromatic resin of Cistus ladanifer, the Mediterranean gum rockrose.
Dense, sticky and intensely fragrant, labdanum resinoid has a deep ambery and balsamic character with leathery, woody, smoky and subtly animalic nuances. It is one of the foundational natural materials used in amber, chypre, leather, incense and oriental-style fragrance compositions.
This is the pure, undiluted crude resinoid rather than a pre-diluted product, essential oil or refined labdanum absolute. Its full-bodied character makes it particularly valuable when depth, warmth and lasting resinous structure are required.
Aroma Profile
Warm, ambery, balsamic and resinous, with leathery, woody, honeyed, smoky and gently animalic facets.
The material is extremely concentrated. Its finer aromatic details are best appreciated after dilution and evaluation on a scent strip.
Uses
Natural Perfumery
Labdanum resinoid is used as a long-lasting base material in natural perfume compositions. It contributes warmth, depth and persistence and can help support lighter floral, citrus, spice and woody notes.
It is particularly suited to:
- Amber accords
- Chypre compositions
- Leather accords
- Incense fragrances
- Tobacco accords
- Woody and forest compositions
- Balsamic and resinous bases
- Dilution for Perfumery
- Because pure labdanum resinoid is extremely thick and sticky, it is normally prepared as a working dilution before formulation.
A 10% dilution is a practical starting point for evaluation and precise weighing.
Gently warm the closed container in a warm water bath to soften the material. Do not place it over direct heat.
Weigh the required amount into a glass container and gradually add perfumer’s alcohol, high-proof ethanol or another appropriate perfumery solvent.
Allow sufficient time for the material to disperse and settle. As this is a crude resinoid containing naturally occurring waxy and resinous matter, a small amount of sediment or cloudiness may remain after dilution. The solution may be filtered if required.
Incense and Aromatic Heating
A very small quantity may be incorporated into loose incense or other botanical incense preparations.
Labdanum may also be gently warmed on a suitable electric incense heater to release its deep resinous aroma.
Because it is highly concentrated and sticky, begin with a very small amount. Use suitable ventilation and never leave heated aromatic materials unattended.
Botanical Scent Study
Evaluate the material both undiluted and at several concentrations to experience how its character changes.
At full strength it may appear dark, dense and strongly resinous. At lower concentrations, warmer amber, leather, honey, wood and balsamic facets become easier to distinguish.
Perfumery and Aromatic Context
Labdanum is the aromatic resinous exudate produced by the leaves and young stems of Cistus ladanifer.
The resin has a long history in Mediterranean aromatic and incense traditions. Modern labdanum resinoid is a concentrated perfumery extract of that resin and should not be confused with cistus essential oil, which is produced from the plant material by distillation.
Labdanum resinoid is generally darker, heavier and more full-bodied than labdanum absolute. The absolute undergoes further alcohol processing to produce a cleaner and more refined extract, while the crude resinoid retains more of the dense, waxy and earthy character of the original resin.

Handling, Safety and Storage
This is a concentrated perfumery raw material and should not be applied directly to the skin undiluted.
Not for ingestion.
Any finished perfume or cosmetic product must be formulated in accordance with the relevant safety, allergen, cosmetic and IFRA requirements for the complete formula.
The material is naturally dense, adhesive and capable of staining containers, tools and work surfaces. Handle with suitable utensils and protective gloves where necessary.
Its texture will change with temperature. It will soften when gently warmed and become firmer in cooler conditions. This is normal and does not indicate deterioration.
Store tightly closed in a cool, dry and dark place, away from direct sunlight, moisture and sources of heat.
A wide-mouth container is recommended because of the material’s thick consistency.
